The West of Yore Hunt Cross Country Ride Back
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I get there?

Lightwater Valley is 3 miles north of Ripon on the A6108 Masham road. It is signed from all major roads, including the A1. View map on Streetmap.co.uk

Is it actually in the Theme Park?
Yes. The start and finish are in the main car park at Lightwater Valley.

Do I have to enter beforehand?
No. You enter on the day when you arrive. To save time, please download an entry form and bring it with you already filled in.

Do I need insurance?
We strongly recommend that all riders (or owners) have Third Party Liability Indemnity insurance in place. This is normally part of your equestrian policy or you may be covered by your household insurance. We suggest you check your policy to make sure. The Countryside Alliance have a block policy which covers all members.

What is the age limit for the reduced entry for children?
Up to and including 12.

Are unaccompanied children allowed?
Yes. We leave it to parents' judgement whether a child is competent enough to go on his or her own. There are several points where the route crosses roads or tracks, so parents in cars can monitor their children's progress.

Is any of the route on a main road?
No. There is a limited amount of tarmac, which is unavoidable. Where the route crosses roads, there are signs to warn motorists and stewards on the ground to help riders cross.

Is a map provided?
Yes. All entrants are given a route card, with a map of the course. See the map from a previous year on this site.

Can I follow on foot or by bike?
People have led ponies round on foot, but some of the course may be very muddy and there may be small streams to cross. It is hard going in places for bikes, but people have done it.

Can I bring my dog?
As there are many horses, some not used to dogs, and as we are passing through livestock farming areas, you asked to keep any dogs on a lead at all times.

Will it be cancelled because of bad weather?
In very exceptional weather, we may have to cancel or shorten it. If so, we will put a notice on this website the Saturday evening immediately before the Ride. In 2006 it snowed unexpectedly overnight and we gave misleading advice, so if you are in any doubt on Sunday morning, ring the number given on the Home page of this site.

Is it necessary to jump?
No. The jumps are for those who want them and can easily be bypassed.

Is there any really rough ground to cross?
No, but you may have to ford a small stream or two. Parts of the course may well be muddy.

What if my horse can't manage 10 miles?
There is a shorter route, of about half the distance, which will be well signed.

Can I get refreshments on the Ride?
There is a halt half way round where riders are given a free drink and snack. At Lightwater Valley, there are several places where hot food can be bought.

Are there any loos?
Yes, at Lightwater Valley.

Is there a vet in attendance?
No, but the organisers can advise you how to contact one in emergency.

What if my horse loses a shoe?
A farrier will be at the start and finishing point.

What do I wear?
As long as you wear a hard hat, you can wear whatever you like. You will be given a number cloth at the entry point, which you are asked to return at the end.

Do riders go in groups or can I go at my own speed?
Go as you like.

Do all riders get a rosette?
Yes. Rosettes are given out in return for the number cloth
